Saw 1 Film Opening Deconstruction final

Extra information:
1) older guy - blonde, suit
younger guy - brown, "trendy"
both opposite ends of the "social scale" & other end of the room too
2) white light unlike normal safety colour, this time used to show abnormality.
3) redish tint to pipes

  • As you can see this is an establishing shot of the room you can see there are no windows showing the audience that they are in a remote location where no one can see or hear them.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • Another reason why you know it is a remote location is that there is only diegetic sound in the room heard meaning that there is no one around because if there was then you would be able to hear them too.
  • The mise en scene of this shot: there are Just 4 walls, no windows.
  • The walls are white showing the blankness to the room.
  • Every where that is dirty is a brownish yellow colour showing the dullness of the room.
  • Also the lights of the room have a tint of blue in making the innocence of the white colour slightly clinical.

  • In the death at the beginning a tilt movement of the camera is used to show the body.
  • As you can see in this shot an aerial shot of the body is used showing the victim and the blood around him.
  • After the shot shown an extreme close up is used of the wounded head, the gun and the tape recorder in his hands.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • Eerie music is played giving the audience a sense of suspense.
  • There is a high pitch scream as you see the body.
  • Then an almost drum like BOOM as each extremely close up is showed.
  • In this shot you can see that the blood is dark meaning been there for a while.
  • The victim also is wearing a white shirt with blood stained on it. the blood on his shirt shows the power he has over them because he hold the things they need for their escape.
(the photo is quite dark, sorry)

  • A close up shot of the face is used when under the water giving the audience the first look at the character.
  • An establishing shot of the bath is then used to show that the character is in the bath and obviously is not in there for choice.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • When the character wakes up in the bath you here thebubbles of air come from his mouth into the water.
  • You then hear his coughing this show the audience that he obviously didn't get in there himself.
  • The character then moves around frantically making the water swish in the bath.
  • There is no noticeable non diegetic sounds which is unusual because normally you would use eerie music to add to the drama.
  • When the establishing shot of the bath is shown there is a blue tint to the colour of the darkness so it is not just black.
  • There is also a blue key that is floating around in the water adding to the blue of the darkness.

  • An extreme close up of the chains is used to show where and how they are tied into the room.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • In this you can hear the chains rattling as they move.
  • You can also hear the screaming of the younger character as the realisation hits him that he is chained in to the room.
  • The chains on the ankle makes it sadistic because by chaining them by their ankle and not by another part of their body like their arm it means they are still free to walk around but not far giving them a sense of freedom.
