Orphan deconstruction

  • With each gun shot that is heard, a jumpcut is used to show another establishing shot of the forest.
  • The vertical compositions of each establishing shot of the forest show strength, which the gun shots conform to because at first, we do not know what is being shot at
  • The white of the sky and the snow connotes purity and innocence which Jimmy conforms to as he doesn't mean wrong by shooting the targets, and when he hits the bird, he shows guilt. It contrasts with the black/dark brown of the tree connoting the upcoming suffering of the bird.

  • Tight framing is used here to show that what he has done to the bird cannot be undone, he cannotundo the actions that he has just done.
  • The shot is close up which shows his emotions when he realises that he has done wrong and that he's caused pain to the pigeon which a conventional childs reaction would be.
  • Non-diegetic low sound is included when Esther comes into the shot later on, maybe to connote the danger that she brings
  • The shot is open which gives it a more natural and simple look also making it unstructured
  • He's placed in the middle of the shot which shows his importance.
  • In this shot, Esther's stern expression is clearly visible, she doesn't give a child-like reaction to the situation
  • The clothing that she is wearing it very mature for a child, more like adult clothing, with it all being quite pristine, dark and neat. It juxtposes his clothing with his jacket hanging loosely on him as a child is expected.
  • When Esther says to him that he should "put it out of his misery" it's as thought she sees no sympathy for Jimmy and that she doesn't care about the guilt that he is feeling, she just wants to cause him more pain.
  • She its the blame on him when she says that "its your [his] responsibility" as though it his fault and it wasn't an accident
  • When Esther says to Jummy "walk away now and it'll starve to death", she quite clearly puts it how it is as an adult would when telling off a child for example, she doesn't care that he's upset.
  • She's at the left hand side of the shot which means that she is the first thing that we would look at, that she is the dominant character here.
  • After Esther kills the bird, we're shown this loosley framed shot which gives the characters space to move which is shown with the boy running away from what's just happened
  • She is standing up hill to where he is, which suggests that she's more powerful than him, that she has power over the way he feels because she's just caused him more upset.
  • There's a high lighting key due to the fact that the snow and sky brighten up the shot, and the density is moderate, as although there's some information to the shot, there's not a lot. They both keep the scene as non-artificial as possible.
  • The girls are at a intimate distance to each other, where as the boy is at a social distance showing the audience the relationship between the three characters.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Deconstruction

  • this is a medium shot of a gaurd walking up to the cell of the boy in prison.
  • by having the boy sat up high and crouched it makes him look bigger than the guard.
  • although the guard is bigger that the convict, the convict takres up more of the shot making him the dominant.
  • this converts the usual convention that the boy has the power because being a convict he obviously doesnt.
  • by having the boy cruled up it shows him as quite child like. this shows the audience that although he is in prison he doesnt really belong there.
  • also the face he is almosed squeezed in the corner but the shot is loosely framed shows that although he feels he is trapped he still has the possibility to sort out the problem.
  •  this is the first close up shot of the murderer that we see as an audience.
  • eventhough this is a close up of the murder he still does not reveal his whole face keeping his full identity still a mystery.
  • by having aclose up of the side of their faces means that you can still see the emotions on each of their faces and their reactions too.
  • the darkness of thsis shot also adds suspense beacause although you can see the boys face you have to look really closely to see the detail on the murderers face because he is more of an outline at a first look.
  • this shot has diagonal composition adding tension and anxiety to the shot.
  • This shot is shallow. Only one plane is in focus. this isolates the characters from the background of the shot.
  • The characters are centered in the frame meaning they are imbortant objects is the shot.
  • this shot has very tight framing showing the audience there is no escape for the boy.
  •  as i am the one in our group studying the music i chose this shot because of the way silence makes it effective.
  • before tis shot you have a point of view shot of the character looking for the murderer then you see this medium shot of the character being stabbed by him.
  • while the point of view shot is happening there is almost complete silence apart rom a couple of quiet digetic sounds.
  • this builds up tension as there is nothing (like non digetic music) to seperate you from the scene. the audience feel completely submerged in the story and feel like they are almost inside the film.
  • i like the idea of silence used this way because it is very effective when it comes to the fear factor and drwing the audience in.

Blair Witch 2 Deconstruction

This post links to a previous post about using a forest as a location.

Walking Through the Woods

  • Tight framing used within the two shot to show the vast nature of the woods, and therefore the possible lack of escape. Captures the background within the shot.
  • Hear them both talking to eachother, but you can also hear digetic sound of the animals and the leaves crunching on the ground as they tread on them.
  • Continuity from one event (unloading the car) to them walking along in the forest, shows that time has moved forward and they've been walking for a while.
  • Carry oversized rucksacks on their back, showing they are not going as a day trip. The forest appears dead and deprived, as not much green is used.

Filming
  • Shakey close ups are seen with tight framing, emphasising the fact that the person filming belongs to the group,
  • Which also links to the sound that can be heard on filming as it's a voice over.
  • Cutaways are used to link the real filming, and the filming that is being percieved in the video, this interupts the storyline and switches back to a reality.
  • Markings on the stones link to the story and have a meaning within the story, the clothes that they wear are quite preppy connoting that they are a group of older teenagers.
Tree Appearance
  • Low angle shot used as if you as a viewer are also looking up at the tree. Tree is centralised in the shot showing it's importance.
  • Creepy music beging to play as non diegetic sound to create tension, links to the tension that is being created by one of the main proganists questioning the trees appearance.
  • Jump cut from person to person to view their responses and there is an eyeline match between them looking at the tree before we as a viewer also see the tree.
  • Tree in the centre is shown as very big when they all look up. Lighting changes to the viewer can tell that normal filming has resumed.

Shroom Forest and Clip deconstruction

  • This is an establishing shot of the woods.
  • by using this shot it shows all the trees which create vertical lines. this conforms to the convention of strength because this is the location that the murder is at his strongest.
  • the shot has an almost green tinge to it showing the audience the corruption of the murderer.
  • the lighting is very low key to show that they are at a 'deep, dark forest'. this makes it more scary for the audience.
  • it is an eyelevel shot to show what the people in the film would see if they were stood here.

  • this is a close up shot of two characters in the woods.
  • again the trees are create vertical lines conforms to the convention of strength because this is the location that the murder is at his strongest especially as there are two people in there now to kill.
  • in this shot one of the trees also creates a diagonal adding tension to the scene.
  • the blue hat that the character on the left is wearing subverts the characterisitcs of the character. the blue hat should represent masculinilty and calmness but the boy is acting quite child like as he is worrying about the murderer.
  • on the other hand the black clothes worn by the character on the right conform to the situation very heavilly. for example both his hair and coat are black showing the mystery of the killer, the sufferignt hey are both going through or about to go through and the threat the killer has on their life.
  • the characters are at a personal distance showin the audience they are friends and not alone.
  • the framing in this shot is moderately loose showing the audience that it is possible to get away from the killer but it is very unlikely.
  • This shot is a medium shot of one of the characters.
  • the lighting in this shot contrasts as there are parts where you can see just the sky then parts that have dark parts showing tradgey.
  • the colour blue is used in both his top and hat which again subverts the characterisitcs of the character. you can also see that he subverts the convention of masculinty and calm by the expression on his face.
  • the composition in this scene is very vertical. the character subverts the sense of strength by his facial expression.
  • the character is show at the edge of the shot showing that there is nothing he can do about his murder and that he is insignificant as he cant do anything about it.
  • this is an open shot to show the whole surroundngs of the woods.

Deconstruction of Chernobyl Diaries Trailer

  • The establishing shot of the four friends together after seeing them on their journeys through different countries enjoying themselves gives the audience a false sense of security.
  • Only until after this scene do we see anything that connotes danger. The non-diegetic sound of an alarm is played suggesting that something is about to go wrong on their "extreme tourism" trip.
  • The writing is on a red strip, which connotes danger and death. The writing on the red strips reveals what happened in Chernobyl which is where the group are visiting. This leaves the audience worried for whats coming next for the characters.

  • This high angle shot from a balcony suggests that they're being watched from the moment they enter the site.

  • The close-up shot of the camera and the photo that has been taken on it whilst the female character is zooming in on one window makes it clear to us that she has spotted someone out of the normal in her photo and from what we can see as the audience, it looks as though it is a ghost.
  • A non-diegetic laugh is included with this shot, it sounds like a childs laugh which seems completely unconnected to the characters so we relate it to the area that they're within.
  • There is also a sudden zoom into the camera which is paired with a loud non-diegetic sound which shocks the audience, maybe to panic them.

  • Straight after the shot above, a high angle shot makes it look as though the group are being watched as they're in the car. It's as though it's being repeated to show that they're being watched from different angles, maybe by different things.
  • The non-diegetic sound of the childs laugh acts as a sound bridge between the two shots.

  • This medium shot of the female character is tightly framed, as though she cannot escape from where she is.
  • As the audience we can see a dark figure at the bottom of the stairs that she has not noticed, this makes us worry for her as from the previous events that we have seen, it's highly suggested to us that this is going to be something in the character's favour.
  • Non-diegetic sound which sounds like somebody breathing heavily is included here which also adds to the mystery of what's going on because it is not indicated to us that the breathing is coming from any of the other characters.
  • After this shot, we see the other characters being distracted by a child figure that has appeared which acts as a distraction because we then hear a very sudden scream and the shot goes straight back the the female character (above) being dragged down the stairs (above).

deconstruction - the eye

The Eye - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wVU8CRESp4

Camera Angles

  • First met with an establishing shot setting the scene in a dark and isolated place.
  • We see lots of close ups of objects, more than we see of faces.
  • Tight framing in the shots before she hangs herself, there is no escape.
  • The masked person before we see all of the other person, showing power and dominance with these camera angles.

Sound

  • Non Digetic music is being played in the background adding a disjointed effect to the whole scene, creating tension and anxiety.
  • There is digetic sound of heavy breathing, and sobbing coming from a character that we cannot see the face of.
  • Can hear screams but cannot tell who makes these screams, assumption coming from a house, but it's in fact the people outside the house.
Editing

  • Jump cuts are featured throughout cutting to different shots, adding to the disjointed state.
  • Parallel editing used, we see people inside the house and outside, making both events in the scene related.
  • Mix different shots with blacked out shots.
Mise en scene

  • Dark shots.
  • Dry/Dead forest featured, potentially showing what is to happen.
  • "Bruja" - meaning "Witch" in Spanish is written on the door in red, conating blood, danger, and death.
  • Shadows used to see the people rather than them themselves.
  • Long wire is shown and an old fashioned chair.
  • Tear falls from an eye - linking back to the movie title.

Deconstuction - The Mist (Supermarket Scene)

http://www.putlocker.com/file/29E24259A8E4FE51#

Camera Angles

  • High angle shot to decrease the amount of power in the situation, in this shot they have just come into the back of the supermarket to confront whatever it is outside of the store, as they do not yet know what is outside of the store in order to diminish their power a high angle shot is used as they have little power in the shot due to the fact that they do not know what they are up against

  • The protagonist is always shot at a higher angle to the man trying to confront him, this is because within the conversation the protagonist has the more intelligent argument so he is never belittled by the other man, even though the other man is constantly trying to assert his authority onto him, even though the height difference is blatant, no attempt to try and equalise them has been made
  • This close up shot isn't to make you notice any features on his face but to create a tight fitting shot, by making the framing of this shot tight you take away the amount of choice he has left in the situation and in this case due to the monster he is facing this shot reduces his choice in whether he lives or dies
  • This shot is effective due to where the camera is placed and his body positioning, its on the same angle as the man but placed on the floor, it links in with his outstretched arm as it shows the little percentage of his body that we can see and how much has been claimed by the monster

Editing
  • Many eye line matches are used in this part of the film due to the monster that has confronted them, what they have done is that they have shown the tentacle that has grabbed this man and shown the fight to keep him alive, the eye line matches show the reaction of someone within the argument and then the piece of action that they are looking at, this was used very well as the actors reactions matched perfectly what was going on
Sound
  • When the tentacle grabs the man, there is a fast paced non diagetic drum beat that continues all the way till he dies, this resembles the fast past action going on in shot.
  • When the argument starts there is no non diagetic sound at all in the shot in order to not give away too much about what is about to happen, it leaves us guessing
  • There is a breeze type sound which resembles the movement of the mist as it blows across the shot
Mise-En-Scene
  • Super market
  • shot in a thick mist
  • Relatively abandoned in this situation
  • Mostly workers about
  • 50/50 mix between women and men in shot

Se7en Deconstruction - sloth death

  • this is an establishing shot of the police cars driving up to the house.
  • it conforms to its genre because is it raining and usually deaths happen in bad weather conditions
  • in this scene everything is really dark meaning the light on the police cars stand out identifying their importance.

  • by showing the body at this angle means that all of the lines in the shot are diagonal making the shot more tense and showing the obscurity in the death.
  • also by having tigh framing it shows the victim had no way out.
  • the body is put in the centre of the shot so the audience have nothing else to focus on forcing them to analyse the body.
  • this shot is of medium density because although you vcan see most cuts and injuries on the body some are covered.

  • a close up shot of the picture found after the death are you used to show the sick mind of the killer.
  • the gloves the detective is wearing also help this because they are green.
  • the black and white photos show the innocence of the victims anf the suffering they felt. it also portrays the sense of mystery about their deaths.

Sources of Inspiration; Use of Corridors

  • the corridor in the possesion is painted green making the scene uneasy for the audience. it also brings a sense of illness to the scene showing the audience something is wrong with the character on the bike.
  • by using this shot it gives the audience a sense of anticipation because its shows you how long the corridor is meaning it will take the little boy a while to ride down it and so there is probably going to be something at the end because it builds suspense as he rides down.
The pros of using a dark room or corridor

Doesn’t cost a lot
Can still look really effective with the right angles and sound
Easy to find
A corridor can create suspense because you never know what’s at the end.
Easier to light than a wood because you can hang lights off of walls ect.

Se7en Opening Titles Deconstruction

Typography -

  • The typography looks handwriting and almost childlike.
  • the white against the black background showed innocence of the victims against the suffering they feel and the mystery of their deaths.
  • the writing also has a loose framing showing the isolation of the victims before their deaths.
Graphic matches

The first shot is a shot of the 'killer' cutting some film. It is a close up shot to show the audience exactly what he's doing.

The next shot is a close up of the 'killer' cutting a picture up. It is also a close up as the graphic match is of the scissors he is using to cut up the items.

  • while the credits are being shown flashes of evidence comes up on the screen.
  • this gives the audience clues to the murder that are revealed later on in the film.

  • Clues are shown throughout the opening titles.
  • for example this shot is a close up of a drawing of one of the murders.
  • this again gives a clue as to what will happen later on in the film.

Graveyard Scene Deconstruction (Drag Me to Hell) - Seyi

  • The use of the graveyard means that all establishing shots will capture all of the graves within the picture, adding suspense and mystery to the location, the size of some of the graves diminishes the dominant (the open grave) as it makes it appear a lot smaller to the viewer so it takes away all of her power, by using the graveyard from a high angle establishing shot you make whatever the focus is not powerful in the daunting surroundings.

  • Within a graveyard you have many daunting figures around such as gravestones etc, with the lighting you illuminate the name which may have some significance to the storyline which in this case it does.

  •  By using the dug up grave you create many verticals within the picture, you are therefore now giving the dominant power within the situation. This is another method of utilising the graveyard in order to create an effect

  • With the resources you could utilise a graveyards main asset, corpses, as corpses are plentiful in graveyards if you wished to use one you easily could due to the appropriate setting you are in

  • By utilising corpses you need to incorporate the attributes of a corpse, this is showing rigamortis, this is making the scene as realistic as possible as the hand she is grabbing is showing all the symptoms, and also the use of maggots with the decomposing body which also shows how realistic they wish to make the scene.

Deconstruction of film opening - Haunted Forest

I am once again going to use a horror movie set in a forest for my deconstruction

http://www.putlocker.com/file/O2S1GIL60MS8G0#

Camera Angles

Firstly Establishing shots are used to set the scene and emphasise where this is taking place, within a forest, also these establishing shots help conform to the connotations of a horror film by showing how isolated the destination is, only a waterfall, rocks and stream is shown and little sign of life is there except for the trees and the man.

Loose fitting is used in this shot however it is not used to signify that this man as some sort of choice or whatever as it doesn't match the situation, instead loose fitting is used in this situation to continue to emphasise how isolated the place is, by using loose framing you have made the shot wider so it is even more visible to see the lack of life around him

All camera shots are generally low angles to show who this character is, at the moment he seems to be an eager traveller exploring the great outdoors, however, as soon as we are aware of this creatures presence, the camera angles will soon change to high angle shots as he is now the least powerful entity in the situation.

This extreme close up shot makes the dominant the colour red, the colour values of the colour red due to the blood basically mean danger, this shot isn't exactly relevant as the injury is minor, but by showing this you make the viewers anticipate danger for this lone man in the forest.

This close up shot is the first sight we get of the creature that is stalking this man, it is a powerful shot as we now can see that this thing is coming from underground which makes it a lot more dangerous than we first anticipated.

Most directors use the eyes of a way of making you sympathise with someone or making you fear them, by doing this close up shot and showing the intense look in the eye of this creature you take away any way of the audience sympathising with it and you immediately make it just a dangerous creature.

Editing
  • A lot of eye line matches were used within the opening scene to show what was happening mainly through the victims eyes but sometimes through the creatures eyes, this made us see how much danger the man was in when he was unaware of it and also when in order to make us feel the anxiety he felt when faced with the creature we saw the situation through his eyes so we could feel his fear
  • Match of action is used when the protagonist of the scene is looking at his injury then putting the stick out of his leg
Sound
  • Most of the sound e.g. the backing tracks are non diagetic, as it runs through the entire opening scene
  • The diabetic sound is the sound of the nature around him e.g. the small waterfall, his footsteps of the various terrain
  • The swift noise that occurs when the creature passes the screen emphasises its speed as well as whatever power it may have
  • The intense non diagetic sound that appears when the hand emerges from the floor, is designed to make the audience jump
Mise-en-Scene
  • Shot within a forest
  • Man in late 30s used as protagonist in the opening scene
  • Grey looking monster used as the killer
