Film deconstruction of The Ward

  • the first shot is of the police car driving down this road.
  • it's a pan shot of the car turning the corner.
  • you can see the location is remote and that there is no one there giving the audience the hint that there is something wrong.
  • all you can hear is the sound of the car and the radio in it talking about 'a missing girl' that they need to find.
  • this gives the audience a taste of the story because you know it will be about the missing girl.

  • the next important shot is the burning house.
  • an establishing shot is used to show the burning house and the damage the fire has caused.
  • the yellow flames taking over the house show the change from the white innocence of the house to the soon to be black suffering of the things and memories inside.
  • in this shot you can hear the wood burning and the flames taking everything in its way. you can hear the crackle as the fire gets to another part of the house.
  • you also hear eerie music which sounds soothing when taking out of the shot but when put with it make the audience feel more on edge toying with their emotions.
  • a graphic match is then used to show you the next part of the story.

  • this shot is of the mental hospital the runaway girl is going to be staying at.
  • it is an establishing shot to show the significance of it to the story.
  • as i said before it is the second part of the graphic match from the shot above.
  • in this shot you can hear the ambulance car driving but also non diegetic very low in pitch dreary music adding an almost suspended tone to the scene.
  • the white and brown of the building showing the innocence of the patients but by adding the brown roof also shows protection. obviously the film subverts the idea of the brown in the building being protection but at this point the audience does not  know it.

  • 10 fast paced jump cuts are then shown of her bruises cut and clues on her body.
  • the audience then realize that there is definitely something wrong with the girl because she has a number written on her hand and a number of different injuries.
  • every time a new shot is shown in the sequence the sound of a camera is being pressed is heard.
  • every time that sound is played and the new image is shown the screen goes white and fades to the next shot. except the shot is in black and white and then fade to normal colours. this happens very quickly giving the audience little time to concentrate on every shot of her.

Shrooms scenes deconstruction

Shrooms scenes deconstruction

  • The camera angle first seems like an establishing shot of the setting of the scene, but paired with the non-diegetic sound which sounds quite discordant and chromatic makes it appear to the audience that maybe this is a POV shot from something's view, something we're not aware of just yet. The shot pans for a few seconds following the characters that we are watching.
  • The use of cross cutting of the shots from the shot behind the tree to in front on the 2 characters allows us to see their reactions to what's going to happen next which we link to what we think is behind the trees.
  • Clearly the shot is in a forest/woods type of area, trees are visible, branches, logs, and leaves. This gives opportunity for the colours of dark green and black to be used, the colour green connotes nature, but because of the dark shade of green that we are able to pick out suggests that something is wrong, that corruption is occurring or that something out of the ordinary is about to happen.
  • The low angle shot follows the character to the floor, we can see the blue sky in the background, the blue connoting a sense of calm outside of the place that these characters are. He's also wearing blue which suggests he's a masculine character who's subjected to what's happening which is clearly scaring him which opposes the conventions of masculine and how men don't really get scared.
  • There's editing involved which blurs the shot, it creates a fear among the audience and also also makes us wonder why it's happening.
  • Diegetic sound of the characters speaking is included, as well as a non-diegetic sound which sounds something like the sound used when a spell is cast.
  • This extreme close up of a masked character doesn't show us much at all other than the moving lips. The extreme close up puts us uncomfortably close with something we do not know what it is which keeps the audience panicked.
  • The diegetic sound used is of the masked character speaking, repeating the same words as when it was last shown which adds to the confusion that the audience are gathering.
  • The use of a mask connotes hidden identity, identity that the characters are unaware of and also that the audience are unaware of.
  • This medium shot of the character tracks him as he runs through a corridor, the use of low lighting adds to the suspense of the scene as it's not always completely clear to us what's on screen which helps us as the audience to feel the same confusion and panic as the character on screen.
  • Diegetic sound of the character heavy breathing adds to our understanding of how scared and panicked this character is as this point, non-diegetic sound is also included, the low notes add to the suspense, they're quite discordant and create a tension within the shot.
  • The lighting on the character is constantly changing through out the shot where he is running past open doors and natural light is shining through whilst he runs down a barely lit corridor, it links with the constantly changing feelings that the character must be feeling at this point, and the panic and the rush to get out from the area that he is within.

Deconstruction of a SLASHER

Halloween I (1978)

Opening Credits

  • Establishing shot at eye level of the pumpkin, makes you feel uncomfortable, feels like it moves in towards you
  • Creepy score used, that is non-digetic - also used throughout the scene
  • A piano is also present, mixed in with what sounds like a sped up clock, creating tension
  • Visual effects used to emphasise the flicker of the candle in the pumpkin and the light is bright for long periods of time
  • Orange text relates to the colour of the pumpkin
House

  • Establishing shot of house, zooms into the door and moves along and around the house, as if we are personally looking at it, from the killers POV
  • Crickets are heard, no voices, so possibly a remote area, which is a convention of a slasher film and typically found
  • Eye line match. look at the window and around the house, and then you see people inside
  • White house used that is very big and on its own, suggesting vulnerability, killers point of view and blurry when looking at two characters due to curtain being in the way

Guy on stairs

  • Low angle POV shot, the camera follows him as he ventures down the stairs, he is always kept in a medium shot, not considering him as a possible victim.
  • Hear digetic sound of him talking to the girl, and score goes higher and faster, making things more tense, knowing that he is not after the guy, but more after the girl
  • No editing used makes you feel much more involved and you are able to act as the murderer and makes you feel uncomfortable that you are put into this situation
  • The movement down of his t-shirt makes it clear that him and the girl had sex, thus making them the first to be killed, as in a typical slasher movie. Shirt is stripy, showing things won't go well

First stabbing

  • Now feel more involved and even more uncomfortable due to the use of a mask, narrow in on the subject. High angle POV when she is dead on the floor, shows the power and dominatiation over her life
  • When the girl is spotted, there is a change in the music, very high pitched, leading to a tense build up, and a drop in the notes making them low when killing is taking place, combining with the high pitched screams
  • Narrow view, not interrupted with editing as this will take away the persona feel of the scene
  • Se through the clown mask makes it much more effective, blood on her chest connotates death, and we see the killer look at the knife so can tell this was a stabbing, she is found naked, showing she had sex and adds to the fact if you have sex in a slasher, you're most likely to die first

Analysing Slender - Seyi

  • The typography used is automatically used to create suspense, the brashness and the rushed looking nature of the text indicates that whatever this game involves is not a very pleasant thing to come across however by using a simple black and white colour scheme you take away any fears of a gory or gruesome scene.

  • The isolated nature of this encourages you to feel alone, the only light source is the minimal lighting of the night sky and the torch that dims as time goes on, the never ending stretch of forest makes you feel as if you are never going to escape this forest with the captor after you, this is effective as it lessens your chances and ups your hopes for survival

  • The random nature of the abandoned car makes you believe that you will not be the only victim here, the car makes you believe that  there has been others in your position in this forest and as the car is empty you know that who ever occupied the car has succumbed to the evil lurking in the forest

  • Seeing the slender man in the background makes his presence known to you, as he is very far from you he holds a threat however it gives you a chance to escape, however now that you know he is that close he knows your whereabouts and can only get closer narrowing your chances of survival

  • The concept of this man leaving notes for you is farfetched as he instantly becomes more dangerous due to the fact that we now know he is an intelligent being, therefore he can use intelligent tactics to capture us, if no writing were on these notes we would assume he was a beast or an alien but the writing makes us think he in in fact similar to being human, also the scary nature of the messages ensure you know that this man is out to harm you
  • The narrow space within this corridor makes you feel even more vulnerable as if this slender man was to confront you within the corridor you would have nowhere to go, if compared to a tv programme or film this would be extremely tight fitting making you seem as if you have no choice at this moment in time
  • He is now literally metres away from you, by making him appear closer you get the idea that as time goes by he only gets closer and closer to you giving you an indication that it is only a matter of time till he catches you
  • You have now been caught, it was easily predictable as all the points i listed above lead to this final point

Quantum of Solace - Opening Scene Deconstruction - Seyi Daramola

The first scene I am going to deconstruct is the first part of the car chase under the tunnel and the lead up to it

Camera Angles

  • Establishing shots of a calm looking tunnel, you get no insight into what is happening within the tunnel so you assume nothing is going on
  • Many extreme close up shots of features such as the wheel of the car, his eye and you only notice that danger is occurring once you see the side of a gun
  • Over the shoulder shots are used incredibly well as if you are seeing the outside of a car over someones shoulder you are basically having a backseat view which makes you feel as if you are a part of the chase
  • The majority of the shots are close ups, mainly to show his calm and more aggressive attitude to the situation
Sound
  • The sound also makes you not think that there is something dangerous occurring within the tunnel as the music you hear is quite classical, non diagetic sound, however in the build up to the tunnel the violin you hear is more intense which builds up the tension until the roar of the aston martin engine engages, then you automatically realise it is a car chase.
Editing
  • Many jump cuts are used in the initial chase to show all the action that is happening, as you need to show all of the action happening and due to the fact that the cars are moving at high speed jump cuts are the best way to show the pace of the chase, also, in order to visualise the extent of the danger you need to see the chase from different angles, this is why they show many different shots of the same thing showing the intensity of the situation
  • When you are seeing the extreme close ups, they are put in the scene in time with the music, which means that you are only realising what is happening in time with the music.
Mise-en-scene
  • Barely illuminated tunnel next to river
  • shot in mid day
  • Packed road
  • Loads of trucks
  • Foreign police, Shot in italy
  • Large mountain side

The 2nd scene I am going to deconstruct is the quarry scene where the car chase continues

Camera Angles
  • Establishing shots are used a lot more as the director is trying to capture where the chase is taking place which shows more danger in the chase due to the steep hills, no roads etc, also the establishing shots allow us to take in the cars being used, James bond is in an Aston Martin DB9 which is a super car valued at around £100,000 while the man chasing is in an alfa romeo which would be valued around £30,000, the difference in cars being used automatically makes Bond seem more powerful and the establishing shots allow us to see this
  • Extreme close up shots once again show the intensity of the chase e.g. the quick gear changes
Editing
  • Jump cuts are once again used to portray all of the action used in a short space of time
Sound
  • The sound seems to build up all throughout the quarry scene until the car falls down the cliff, it then goes silent once again
Mise-en-scene
  • Large cliffs
  • Quiet quarry
  • Super cars
  • Obstacles e.g. tractors

Pros and cons of Action

Pros and cons of Action

Deconstruction of Casino Royale

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJubOZLpp4A&safe=active

In action films there are a number of sub genres, however I will be focusing on the spy action sub genre.
I will deconstruct the 2006 film 'Casino Royale'

Good vs evil - (chase scene on cranes) 4:15

 Camera angles
  • Close up shots to show facial expressions
  • Establishing shots of high cranes
  • Low angle shots in order to see the situation from a ground POV
  • High shots emphasising the sheer drop below
Editing
  • Eyeline match from the protagonist to the enemy, also used to see where to jump
  • Cutaways from main protagonist used to look at others, then we see the main protagonist again
Sound
  • Suspense and tension building non digetic soundtrack
  • Digetic sound of heavy breathing and panting, combined with the 'thud' from the jumps
Mise en scene
  • Sky in background
  • Clothes used blend in with the dry area and the other people within the area
  • Blue cranes are darker than that of the sky to stand out

Explosion - (final explosion) - 9:00

Camera angles
  • Close up of gun before explosion, also of others expressions and the gas can
  • Low angle shot of people flying through the air due to explosion (see picture)
  • Establishing shot shows the damage that has been caused
Editing
  • Eyeline match from Bond to the gas
  • Visual effects of fire and the explosion
Sound
  • Digetic sounds of:
  • Gun
  • Gas
  • Flames going up
  • Screams and yells
  • Paper falling to the ground
  • Building collapsing
  • Flickering of fire
Mise en scene
  • Lots of paper, emphasises damage
  • Collapse of buildings
  • Security do not stand out to Bond being the dominant

Saw 1 Film Opening Deconstruction final

Extra information:
1) older guy - blonde, suit
younger guy - brown, "trendy"
both opposite ends of the "social scale" & other end of the room too
2) white light unlike normal safety colour, this time used to show abnormality.
3) redish tint to pipes

  • As you can see this is an establishing shot of the room you can see there are no windows showing the audience that they are in a remote location where no one can see or hear them.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • Another reason why you know it is a remote location is that there is only diegetic sound in the room heard meaning that there is no one around because if there was then you would be able to hear them too.
  • The mise en scene of this shot: there are Just 4 walls, no windows.
  • The walls are white showing the blankness to the room.
  • Every where that is dirty is a brownish yellow colour showing the dullness of the room.
  • Also the lights of the room have a tint of blue in making the innocence of the white colour slightly clinical.

  • In the death at the beginning a tilt movement of the camera is used to show the body.
  • As you can see in this shot an aerial shot of the body is used showing the victim and the blood around him.
  • After the shot shown an extreme close up is used of the wounded head, the gun and the tape recorder in his hands.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • Eerie music is played giving the audience a sense of suspense.
  • There is a high pitch scream as you see the body.
  • Then an almost drum like BOOM as each extremely close up is showed.
  • In this shot you can see that the blood is dark meaning been there for a while.
  • The victim also is wearing a white shirt with blood stained on it. the blood on his shirt shows the power he has over them because he hold the things they need for their escape.
(the photo is quite dark, sorry)

  • A close up shot of the face is used when under the water giving the audience the first look at the character.
  • An establishing shot of the bath is then used to show that the character is in the bath and obviously is not in there for choice.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • When the character wakes up in the bath you here thebubbles of air come from his mouth into the water.
  • You then hear his coughing this show the audience that he obviously didn't get in there himself.
  • The character then moves around frantically making the water swish in the bath.
  • There is no noticeable non diegetic sounds which is unusual because normally you would use eerie music to add to the drama.
  • When the establishing shot of the bath is shown there is a blue tint to the colour of the darkness so it is not just black.
  • There is also a blue key that is floating around in the water adding to the blue of the darkness.

  • An extreme close up of the chains is used to show where and how they are tied into the room.
  • Continuity editing is used to keep real time.
  • In this you can hear the chains rattling as they move.
  • You can also hear the screaming of the younger character as the realisation hits him that he is chained in to the room.
  • The chains on the ankle makes it sadistic because by chaining them by their ankle and not by another part of their body like their arm it means they are still free to walk around but not far giving them a sense of freedom.

Batman: The Dark Knight opening deconstruction

Batman: The Dark Knight deconstruction of opening.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OYBEquZ_j0

Opening shot of the city

  • Establishing shot of the city, it's clear to the audience that wherever this scene is shot is a built up area, one full of sky scrapers with people working within them. This make it clear to the audience that the film won't take place in just one place, it's a city and the film will take part within it.
  • A wide angle lens has been used which captures a broad area, the city in this case and it makes it appear very 3D to us, as though the building are continuous and we gather an understanding of the depth of the city.
  • The movement of the camera is zoom, the camera zooms in on one of the buildings that we see at the beginning of the shot, it's as if the audience have to wait for something to happen, and then one of the windows is shot through and the audience have been given what they were waiting for.
  • There's diegetic sound of traffic and car horns which just adds to the audience's understanding of the place that this shot is taking place in, and that it's a busy city yet it's about to be terrorized by a gang.
  • There's also non-diegetic sound played throughout the zoom. Sounds like a timer counting down or a clock ticking, something indicating that time is passing which suggest to the audience that they're supposed to be waiting for something to happen, and then that something does happen when the window is shot through within the first couple of seconds which induces shock as well as understanding to the audience.
  • As the window is shot through, the shot switches to one of the character who just shot through the window, the character is an anonymous one wearing a mask and holding what seems to be a
    • Guns connoting danger and crime
    • Masks, in this case, connoting crime and hidden identity

Men zipwiring across
  • Non-diegetic sound, low notes which sound like something played on a string instrument, accompanies by sudden gun shot sounds which again signal that something negative is about to happen, as the characters we've seen have all been partaking in activity that seems illegal and suspicious.
  • Birds-eye view camera angle is used to show how high the characters are, high as if they're avoiding the people on the ground, the people that would see them and wonder what they're doing, but from the birds-eye view it seems that there are now people down below, just cars so people won't suspect them.
  • Both zip-wiring characters are wearing masks, this creates connection among the masked characters that we have seen within the first few shots of the opening scene as they're all wearing masks that hide their identity whilst they seem to be hijacking a city.
  • This scene conforms to an action film, it's extreme action that would definitely not happen in every day life.

Scene inside the bank
  • The diegetic sound of the masked men talking allows the audience to understand that the place is being raided but because we can't see the mouths moving of the masked characters, as the audience we cannot sense who's talking and demanding for actions to be made and this makes us feel the confusion that the other innocent characters in the shot are feeling.
  • The shot used is again an establishing one, it shows us the building that the raid is taking place in and that it's a bank and helps the audience understand that the characters are raiding a bank.
  • Cross-cutting is used to show what is going on elsewhere as part of the raid and how the other masked characters are working outside to help with the raid.
  • The full shot of the character who gets shot by one of the masked character adds to the crime of the situation, which is what you expect from an action film, a crime scene and murders, conforming to the conventions of an action film.
  • During the medium shot of one of the masked men (3:57), the background is blurred indicating that is was most likely filmed using a telephoto lens, and also makes him the dominant of the shot. We can see that he is dressed in a suit, just like the other masked men and just like the other characters that we see in the scene, which may suggest that this group of masked men are just like normal people that have decided to individualize themselves from others with the masks, hide their identity for criminal reasons.

Within the safe
  • Throughout the opening scene we see the masked characters kill eachother off, this subverts to the conventions as it's usually good vs evil in action films like Batman, but during this scene it's evil working with evil yet they kill eachother off.
  • Non-diegetic sound of the atmospheric music continues throughout the scene acting as a bridge within all the scenes, relating them all to one another. The ticking is still continuing as though the counting down has not come to an end which keeps the audience's attention as it suggests the worst is still yet to happen.
  • The eye-level shot of this point within the opening scene makes us as the audience feel as though we're watching what he's doing, from our point of view, as if we are standing within the door way of the safe watching this criminal action take place. Because of the use of the masks within the beginning, the audience have created a connection with clowns and crime within the film, and later on, even if you did not have a previous understanding of Batman, you would understand that the Joker has a permanent clown face painted on him, and he is the evil within the film.

Deconstruction of Scream 4 - Mollie

Scream 4 (2011) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBPgEMfkx5c

Use of a phone calling victims - 7 mins

Camera Angles

  • Medium shot allowing us to focus in on the potential victims, but not to a point where we feel emotionally connected with them.
  • The loose framing shows that they have a way to escape, but from the genres conventions, this will be hard.
Editing
  • Many cross cuts are featured in this.
  • Adds tension, and builds it up in order to keep us on the edge of our seats.
Sound
  • Digetic sound of a croaky voice on the other line of the phone.
  • The non-digetic sound of music fits in with the zoom of the camera onto the subject.
Mise en Scene
  • Blonde girls used for innocence and vulnerability as both end up getting killed.
  • Brown background makes her in a grey shirt blend in, but at the same time differentiates her from the scene.
  • Kitchen doesn't appear to have been in use.

Unexpected stab of girl - 4:24

Camera Angles

  • Begins with a two shot from the front view of the subjects.
  • We get a close up of the knife in the girl on the left's stomach.
  • Before seeing a close up of the girls faces from the side.

Editing
  • Emphasised effects of blood coming out of both the belly and the mouth.
  • Eye line match of the knife going into the stomach, then we see the girls reaction.
Sound
  • Digetic sound of the can of drink, leading us into false pretence that this is a knife being drawn.
  • Yell of the stabbing and digetic sound of them both talking.
Mise en Scene
  • Protagonist on the right wears a pink top, however this is not a girly pink, and is an off pink colour, indicating she isn't quite right.
  • Once again, 2 blonde and seemingly innocent and vulnerable girls.
Lights out - 8:11

Camera Angles

  • Close up of the girls face, see the terror that she is feeling.

Editing
  • Jump cuts add tension and also shows the way she looks around the room, looking for a killer.
Sound
  • Digetic sound of the phone call, and the voice on the other end.
  • Noticed is no background music, therefore our main attention is focused on the situation.
Mise en Scene
  • Supposed to be in darkness due to lights being out, but we can see her due to the blue light surrounding and the stairs indicating the tension and anxiety being felt.
  • Blonde girl used for vulnerability and innocence.

Crawl down stairs - 9:30

Camera Angles

  • POV shot of the murderer.
  • See the girl at a hight angle.
  • Tight framing used, the stairs surround her, there is no escape.

Editing
  • Blood on the back indicating where she was stabbed.
Sound
  • Digetic sounds of the scream and her breaths as she falls down the stairs.
  • Non digetic sound of string instruments used helps build up to the climax.
Mise en Scene
  • As she goes further down the stairs, she blends in more, due to lighting,
  • Crawl on hands and knees to show that she is still trying hard to get away, but is not fully able too.
  • Blonde girl used for innocence.

Deconstruction of Bad Boys 2 Opening Scene - Seyi

Camera Angles

  • A low angle shot is used to show Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as they emerge from the KKK outfits, this shot is effective as even though they are black men surrounded by racist whites they still seem powerful in the situation.
  • This use of high angle shots is used throughout this scene as even though the odds seem low towards them they still hold their own through out the scene
  • Camera angle slightly hovers over Will Smith when using the over the shoulder shot where he is looking at the man holding his partner at gun point, this exaggerates the height difference between him and the man showing that he still has control over the situation
  • A close up of Will Smith's and Martin Lawrence's faces are used to show their reactions to the situation, this is sued well as you can see the intensity in Will's face where as you can see the submissiveness in Martin's as he in the one trying to calm the situation down.
  • Establishing shots of where the shootout is going to take place help set the scene due to the mist in the air that is more obvious due to the shot used, this mist adds an extra mystery to the scene also

Editing
  • Cutaways are used very well to create suspense when there is static between the two undercover cops and the swat team in the water, this means that you know more than the undercover cops themselves as you know how the situation might play out as you know that no connection has been established between the two parties
  • The main type of editing used is continuity editing so that you can literally see the tension build up from when the undercover cops reveal themselves to when the shootout starts, this way you can anticipate what is going to happen and it will give the viewer a feel of excitement in the same time as the actors
Sound
  • When you are facing the men in the water you hear a lot of nature's noises e.g. birds or any different animals within the surrounding forest, however they are much more exaggerated in their volume as you would not normally hear them, these noises create more suspense in the situation as it is if they are in an environment where they have less power in
  • The pace of the music builds up when one of the KKK henchmen tries to make a run for it, this pace speeds up until the gun clicks to one of the cops heads, this creates an unexpected stop to the music as the gun click is where the pace stops completely
  • Most sound is non diagetic, all of this is used to create or lose tension in the situation
  • The pace of the music escalates once again once the action builds up once more, use of electric guitars and drums to create a more action type feel in the situation, rather than a perilous one.
  • When a slow motion shot occurs, the sound also slows down allowing the whole scene to slow down, this allows you to slow down with the shot to see whats happening
Mise-En-Scene
  • Use of the mist to create a sense of mystery as you do not know 100% what is happening
  • Dirty clothing and unhygienic men used as the KKK men to show the uncivilised nature of the people
  • Chemicals and bottles around as even though you don't see drugs you get a hint that that is what is going on in the background
  • Burning cross to show the intensity of the racist men's beliefs
